Ideal for Family Vacations on Cape Cod

The Cape is one of the best places we know for families vacationing with kids...and ShoreWay Acres Inn is perfectly located to enjoy so many kid-friendly activities, both at the Inn and very close by! And, parents who would like the charm of a Bed and Breakfast Inn, do not need to sacrifice kid-friendly facilities.

At the Inn, kids have their choice of both indoor and outdoor pools, a rarity in our area where most hotels offer only one or the other due to space limitations. Our five acres of grounds give families plenty of room to play croquet, badminton, volleyball, bocce, and corn toss, or swing on our old-fashioned wooden lawn gliders. Our selection of board games and our "no-tech zone" toy chest offer many wholesome opportunities for kids to interact with each other and their families while providing parents with a little of their own childhood nostalgia. And, ShoreWay Acres' barbecue grills and picnic areas make family cookouts an affordable dining option during Spring, Summer, and Fall.

The Inn's village location is within short walking distance of Surf Drive Beach, Mullen-Hall playground, Shiverick's duck pond, the "Whoosh" Trolley stop, Eight Cousins Children's Bookshop, Kaleidoscope Toy Shop, Leary Family Amusements, Peg Noonan Park with free summer family movies, and Falmouth Museums on the Green where family exhibits and activities make Cape Cod history delightfully entertaining and educational. Bicycle and surrey rental shops, family restaurants, and shops offering homemade ice cream and chocolates are also just a short stroll from the Inn. Our Falmouth Public Library, located at the top of our street, is a truly a local gem with a charming children's library and a variety of family friendly activities.

Just a short coastal drive from our family hotel is a continuing array of family activities. ShoreWay Acres' guests are invited to visit our sister property, Green Harbor Waterfront Lodging, where they may use our free rowboats and paddleboats for their own private "nature cruises" along the marshes of our beautiful ocean inlet...with ducks, geese, swans and blue heron. An outdoor pool and kiddie pool are also available at Green Harbor along with shuffleboard, lawn games, and glider swings. Weekly "campfire sing-alongs" are held on Green Harbor's boating beach during the summer months.

A picturesque bike ride along Surf Drive Beach at the end of our street will take you to Falmouth's Shining Sea Bikeway, a three-mile hiking and biking trail along the ocean. This is one of Cape Cod's most scenic bikeways with the storybook island of Martha's Vineyard in full view and historic Nobska Lighthouse on the bluff. It's the perfect place for family hiking, biking and bicycles built for two!

Just one mile from the Inn is Marina Park overlooking Falmouth Harbor, where free outdoor band concerts are held weekly during the summer, and special events are held throughout the year. Ferries to Martha's Vineyard leave from this convenient location from May through October. Reasonably priced family fishing excursions and private charters can be arranged at the harbor as well. For a memorable seafaring adventure, try a day sail on the magnificent Liberte, a 74' three-masted schooner departing from Falmouth Harbor to whatever nearby island the wind and tides suggest! www.theliberte.com

Historic Highfield Hall, also located a mile from the Inn is likely one of the most kid friendly "arts and cultural centers" your family will ever visit. Set in a lovingly restored 1878 historic mansion with its stately lawns and sunken garden, Highfield offers kids' culinary and garden programs, arts, crafts and music workshops and self-guided nature hikes in adjacent Beebe Woods. Holidays at Highfield is an annual event offering family activities that celebrate Cape Cod's Christmas spirit. Tours of the mansion feature Christmas trees designed by community organizations such as the National Marine Life Center, People for Cats, Friends of Falmouth Dogs, Falmouth Cranberry Festival, and Falmouth Garden Club. A wonderful treasure is Highfield's "Christmas Around The World Nativity Scenes", a personal collection shared with all of us by Falmouth resident, Bill Hendel. "The Any Soldiers Project" is a heartwarming activity where parents and children write letters to soldiers serving our country. Located right next door to Highfield Hall is Highfield Theater, with summer stock and holiday musical productions that the entire family will enjoy.

Cape Cod Children's Museum, in nearby Mashpee, is our "Look, Discover, Explore, Touch, Create, Build, Pretend museum for the child in everyone"! Here, families can learn and play together with hands-on exhibits, a pirate ship, an indoor planetarium, a sand room, a puppet theater, a toddler play area, and exciting daily programs. Voted "Best Kid's Activity and Rainy Day Activity" by Cape Cod Life Magazine, The Cape Cod Children's Museum is a "must visit" attraction for families with young children.

Falmouth's fabulous fishing village of Woods Hole blends rustic seaside charm with cutting-edge ocean science. Woods Hole is world renowned for our Marine Biological Laboratories and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution www.whoi.edu whose scientists discovered the Titanic. A visit to the Exhibit Center at 15 School Street, will delight kids and grownups alike as they sit in a cutaway "cockpit" of ALVIN, a replica of the submersible used to explore the Titanic. See a fascinating exhibit on the Titanic with actual film footage from the wreckage.

Families love Woods Hole's Marine Fisheries' free aquarium, a low-key attraction with a resident seal, starfish touch tank, and a specimen blue lobster on display! Oceanquest, a 90-minute hands-on discovery cruise that departs from Woods Hole, allows families to get up close and personal with the ocean, pulling lobster traps, dragging plankton nets, and using a Discovery Scope while learning about our underwater world!

From building sandcastles and collecting shells on one of Falmouth's many Cape Cod beaches to taking in a fun Cape Cod Baseball League game with the Falmouth Commodores, playing mini golf in nearby Cataumet Village, or whalewatching in Hyannis or Provincetown, the lengthy list of year-round festivals and events provides more family fun on Cape Cod than one visit could possibly permit. Check here often for updates on activities, events and attractions in one of America's most family-friendly destinations!
